Great news has been released from Marvel and Gazillion about their upcoming MMO Marvel Universe. The game which was originally developed by Cryptic Studios as Marvel Universe Online with a subscription based system left many fans disappointed and was eventually cancelled. Cryptic Studios continued to develop the game using The Champions license. The year after the cancellation of Marvel Universe Online, Cryptic Studios released Champions Online which started as a subscription based game but transitioned to free-to-play last year.

In 2009, Marvel signed a ten-year exclusive deal with Gazillion Entertainment which is a studio composed of many Cryptic employees and focuses on developing free-to-play games. They announced that they are developing a new Marvel Universe which will be free-to-play and emphasized that they want to provide a gamer experience that is highly accessible. They also confirmed that gamers would be able to play Marvel characters such as Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hulk and Nova. The launch date was not announced.

Rob Hutler, CEO of Gazillion, said in his interview with Big Download, "We’ve been working quietly over the past three years in stealth mode putting together studios and a team to go after what we see as a key opportunity over the next decade -- bringing the MMO format to the mainstream audience."
